This Time is a project about release: the desire for it, the pursuit of it, and its approach. Each song offers a meditation on the way of release and what it requires: awakening to possibility (“Something More”), receptivity (“Key of Gray”), faith in the form of patient waiting (“What If”), and radical action (“This Time”). “Something More” expresses an intense yearning to transcend limitations and a growing sense that it just might be possible. “Key of Gray” describes the experience of being called to inspired creativity and contemplation: a girl is summoned to her piano and transformed while playing it. “What If?” stages a hopeful call-and-positive response encounter as a witness to another’s dark night encourages perseverance and expectation of dawn. An anthem of emancipation, the title track “This Time” celebrates that moment when enough is enough, you know it, and you set yourself free.

Lyrics

  1. Something More

Push, and pull, and prod

It’s just another day

Waking up with dread

And that voice I can’t escape

Why do I do the things I do?

Struggle is a virtue

It brings its own rewards

In time it’s sure to pay

In oh so many ways

Who’s to say that’s the truth today?

I want to be free

I want to feel whole

To know that what I do

Is for something more

I want to be free

I want to feel whole

To know that what I do

Is for something more

Want, and strive, and slave

Every day’s the same

Working to the bone

For far too little gain

Why do we do the things we do?

They prompt me every day

To listen and obey

They say they know it’s hard

But there’s just no other way

Who’s to say that’s the truth today

I want to be free

I want to feel whole

To know that what I do

Is for something more

I want to be free

I want to feel whole

To know that what I do

Is for something more

It’s time to be brave

To be bold

To be sure

Reach beyond the cage

Transcend habit’s ways

Be my something more

I want to be free

I want to feel whole

To know that what I do

Is for something more

I want to be free

I want to feel whole

To know that what I do

Is for something more

Who’s to say that things can’t change today?

Who’s to say that things can’t be great?

I want to be free

2. Key of Gray

It’s happening again

An image creeping in

And it seizes the depths of me

Sometimes, it shows up as beauty

Sometimes, it brings me to my knees

And I stand here

Try to get clear

As a storm swells within

I love you

I hate you

Thank you

You’re ever with me

Every feeling

Contradiction

Resolves in a key of gray

I’m just a girl at her piano

Trying to make sense of mystery

A silent witness

Trying to give shape to all that moves in me

She sits there in the sun

Beckons me to come

And I listen

I heed

It’s a call to recognition

Of a prompting

An inner need

And I stand here

Try to get clear

As a storm swells within

I love you

I hate you

Thank you

You’re ever with me

Every feeling

Contradiction

Resolves in a key of gray

I’m just a girl at her piano

Trying to make sense of mystery

A silent witness

Trying to give shape to all that moves in me

I love you

I hate you

Thank you

You’re ever with me

Every feeling

Contradiction

Resolves in a key of gray

A key of grace

3. What If?

Oooooh Oooh Oooooh

Oooooh Oooh Oooooh

Your gray eyes don’t lie

I see you this time

You can’t breathe to speak

Frozen in fire

Your guilt and your crime

Are there in your mime

Voiceless, your words

Lack heart and desire

So I shout down the well

To the cave where you dwell

But my echo gets lost

Amid your dark thoughts

Don’t give up (Oooooh Oooh Oooooh)

Don’t give up (Oooooh Oooh Oooooh)

What if the best is yet to come?

What if the best is yet to come?

Reject love, embrace hate

Blame the world, blame your fate

For a mistake you didn’t make

Your pain is oh so great

A martyr perhaps

But your countenance warns

Your halo grows heavy

Beneath all of those thorns

So I shout down the well

To the cave where you dwell

But my echo gets lost

Amid your dark thoughts

Don’t give up (Oooooh Oooh Oooooh) (I won’t give up)

Don’t give up (Oooooh Oooh Oooooh) (I won’t give up)

What if the best is yet to come?

What if the best is yet to come?

Don’t give up (Oooooh Oooh Oooooh) (I won’t give up)

Don’t give up (Oooooh Oooh Oooooh) (I won’t give up)

Don’t give up (Oooooh Oooh Oooooh) (I won’t give up)

Don’t give up (Oooooh Oooh Oooooh) (I won’t give up)

Don’t give up (Oooooh Oooh Oooooh) (I won’t give up)

What if the best is yet to come?

What if the best is yet to come?

4. This Time

Phone rings

The world stands still

A chill shoots through

Before I answer

My body knows it’s you

I pick up

You speak

My throat closes

My heart sinks

That familiar tale again

Again

This time I won’t be trapped

Get caught off guard or held back

Put my life on hold for you

Lose myself to get you through

This time I’ll walk away

My head held high

Let what’s broken die

Rise above, aim high

Aim high, aim high

Change my number

Pack my bags

Board the plane

With a smile on my face

A new life begins

Take my seat

Reclaim my space

Removing you

Rewriting me

True life begins

This time I won’t be trapped

Get caught off guard or held back

Put my life on hold for you

Lose myself to get you through

This time I’ll walk away

My head held high

Let what’s broken die

Rise above, aim high

Aim high, aim high

This time it will be different

This time it will be the last time

This time I won’t be trapped

Get caught off guard or held back

Put my life on hold for you

Lose myself to get you through

This time I’ll walk away

My head held high

Let what’s broken die

Rise above, aim high

Aim high, aim high

This time
