With “Midnight Mystery,” I set aside the neoclassical piano-and-strings writing of my earlier work and let the voice lead, stripping the song down to feeling and emotional immediacy. An intimate ballad about lost love and the disorienting absence left when intimacy disappears, it traces the fall “from ecstasy to misery” and the reality of a now-empty bed. Layered vocals and a gradually building arrangement deepen the longing and loneliness as hopelessness gives way, little by little, to courage, faith, and hard-won confidence.
