With “Midnight Mystery,” I set aside the neoclassical piano-and-strings writing that carried my earlier work and let the voice lead instead, stripped down to feel and genre over ornament. “Midnight Mystery” is an intimate, emotional ballad about lost love: longing for passion that is no longer, that feeling of a now empty bed. A song on the fall “from ecstasy to misery,” the track traces a painful relationship left behind, hopelessness giving way little by little to courage, faith and a hard-won confidence.
